The digital world is known not only for its benefits but also for the dangers it presents. Operating since 2014, Sodec Technologies has been a partner to many local businesses. The company made its first move towards becoming a global player with an expansion in Poland.

Identity theft has become one of the most discussed topics in recent times. As emerging technologies find significant applications in the financial world, it has naturally shifted the focus of cyber attackers toward this area.

Biometric identification methods are widely used, from university-campus access to mobile banking, passport transactions, and operator-based identity verification. Sodec Technologies is one of the companies operating in this field. Established by Hasan Dertli in 2014, the company quickly established its place in the sector. Dertli’s goal is to take his brand to the global arena.

Opened an office in Poland

You can think of Sodec as a system that manages data from end to end. Solutions related to the entire process, such as data capture, analysis, verification, and storage, are developed here, whether the data is biometric or not. Dertli, who states that they have implemented solutions capable of managing all types of data actively used in daily life, such as identity and documents, says, “As a local technology company, we have important and large partnerships with leading businesses in Turkey, but expanding globally is our biggest goal. As the first step of this goal, we opened our office in Poland.”

Dertli emphasizes that they always advise their business partners to continue working with a local company, particularly in areas like security, where businesses need strong partners. He believes that working with a local company makes businesses more agile and better prepared for local threats.

The rise of deepfake continues

According to a survey conducted by global companies in 2024, 50% of consumers reported that their personal data was exposed in 2023. Another report noted a 3000% increase in deepfake attacks in 2024. The same report also recorded an 18% increase in digital document forgery. These figures have impacted consumer behavior, with 68% of consumers reporting that they make payments while considering the risk of identity fraud.

Dertli highlights that deepfake videos are becoming increasingly convincing, especially with the development of artificial intelligence. He explains that their solutions provide a secure environment for both individual and corporate users by performing end-to-end scanning. Dertli says, “There isn’t a centralized application for this. There’s only a solution that scans for deepfake, but not one that scans everything. We don’t just do phone scans. We include photos, images, text—everything. For example, if you create a piece of news, I capture the photo from the magazine and upload it to the system. I ask, ‘How much of this news was generated by AI?’ The system breaks it down sentence by sentence, frame by frame. Moreover, this is a B2C product, meaning it checks if the content is original. In B2B, our system not only identifies AI-generated outputs but also detects forgeries. So, we can easily tell if the content or identity is real or fake using our system.”

Entered top 10 in NIST tests

Certification and testing in identity verification and biometric verification processes are crucial. Dertli notes that Sodec Technologies entered the top 10 in facial recognition tests conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with a false acceptance rate of one in a million. He continues, “These types of tests prove the reliability of biometric verification and demonstrate how high security and accuracy are in identity verification processes. Facial spoofing creates security vulnerabilities in existing identity verification and remote customer acquisition processes. While active liveness detection methods fall short, AI-supported passive liveness detection technologies can detect spoofing attacks and enhance security while maintaining user experience. NIST facial recognition tests have proven the reliability of biometric verification, and the importance of security certifications is greater than ever.”

Tips to Protect Against Identity Theft:

  1. Use secure internet protocol (HTTPS): HTTPS establishes a secure channel over an insecure network. It provides sufficient protection against attacks, provided the use of adequate encryption and verification of server certificates.
  2. Don’t open every email: Phishing attacks often come from fake accounts claiming to be trusted brands. Avoid opening any attachments or files from invoices or notifications not related to your trusted brands.
  3. Use security software: Ensure you use paid security software from reputable brands and keep the software updated to the latest version.
  4. Invest in multiple backup systems: Backup critical data at regular intervals to ensure you can restore systems quickly in case of an attack.
  5. Strong passwords are essential: Ensure all your passwords are strong. Avoid using personal information like birth dates and special occasions, which are often easily accessible via social media.
  6. Be cautious with social media posts: Cybercriminals increasingly target children’s identity information. Exercise caution with social media sharing.
